""I've got great boots" boots!"

It's that glorious time of the year again, boot season is here and only a Rachel Greene "Friends" quote can adequately stress how excited I am. Now I know many of you are probably thinking, "Liz it has been boot season for a while now," but for us girls in Southern California the temperatures have finally dropped into the 60s during the day and therefore it feels like our fall may finally be here.
I was so excited to see the sea of boots at Macy's today after getting my brows done at the Benefit Brow Bar, which will warrant its own post. It's fabulous and so easy!
But back to the sea of boots that was calling my name to venture through. I love boots, but I have found a few issues with them for me. One, like many active women, I have athletically shaped calves that often do not work with standard boots. This usually leaves me with the option of seeing if the store can order the boots in a wide calf. The challenge of this that one, you are never sure how the boots will look until you get them in the mail, two many styles do not come in wide calf options, and finally and most importantly, three, even though you have a wide calf does not mean you have a wide ankle, which means the boots bunch up around the ankle if you size the calf up. Still, when I was living in NYC, I would spend hours every season looking for my magic pair of boots that would meet my style needs and calf needs all in one.
Now that I have lived in California for a few years, I am noticing things starting to change. I have started to embrace the booties trend. Booties still give me the feeling of it being fall in my wardrobe, but keep me cool and comfortable in LA's fall and winter weather (which is the equivalent of spring temperatures for most of the country). Booties also have allowed me to join in on the boot trends every year, keeping my fashionista itch at bay. To go with my two pairs of slouchy boots and mid calf Frye boots in my closet I have since added three pairs of booties over the last 2 years and I couldn't love them more! I find my tall boots have been relegated to the back of the closet.
Have you ventured into the booties world? If not, what's stopping you?!

Sweat in Style

Everyone does it, but who says you can't look cute while doing it? While working out, whether it is at the gym, in the great outdoors, or in the privacy of your own home, getting your sweat on isn't always the most glamorous endeavor.
A few years ago, I tore multiple ligaments in my ankle and since my recovery have been fighting to get the injury weight back off. I was already a pretty active person, playing on a kickball, dodgeball and two softball teams, but I needed to concentrate on getting stronger and improving my overall cardio. As a result I decided it was time to reactivate my gym membership and get back to my daily gym visit.
I know a lot of people hate the gym, but many cannot deny how great regular exercise feels for the body, mind and soul. But I wonder how many people think about what they wear to the gym? I have found in the past 2 years that investing in quality gym wear that is also flattering on your body makes being active a lot more fun and confidence boosting. How can a girl not feel great when her workout pants make her ass look fantastic, instant confidence boost.
About 18 months ago, my awesome sister in law introduced me to Lululemon Athletica. I was at first very hesitant to make too many purchases there because the pieces are expensive but after wearing a few of their clothes when I regularly worked out and seeing how great they made me look, I was sold. Their products have great seaming and flatter a woman's curves, but more importantly last for years. I have tried out products from all different brands and at all different price ranges, but when I finally broke down the cost per wear it already was equivalent to my lower priced pieces and I still have so many wears to go.
The company's customer service is also unparalleled. I have had two different pieces have wear and tear beyond general use and they damaged them out on the spot and gave me credit to get something new at the store. I also want to tell people about a program they have, the Research and Development Team. If you have a professional license for any athletic training such as pilates, personal training or even scuba diving, or work for a gym, you can get 15% off every purchase you make in store.
Below are my current obsessions at Lulu and each piece is super comfy and on trend, because sometimes you want to look good while you sweat and other times you want to look good when you are lounging.

The Elegance of Grace Kelly

For the past 2 days my husband and I have both been feeling under the weather, which does not make for a very exciting Halloween in many people's minds. Still my husband, in an effort to perk me up, suggested we turn all the lights off, make some popcorn and watch a movie.
Now, anyone that knows me, is well aware of the fact that I HATE scary movies. Dan, my husband, forced me to watch Paranormal Activity on a date early on in our relationship, and honestly I can't believe we survived that showing. The only scary/suspense movies I have come to love are those by Alfred Hitchcock (and for some reason the Scream series).
As a compromise to his movie idea, I countered with introducing him to Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window." Now let me say, I know the movie is outdated in its special effects, which were only highlighted further by our blue-ray player, but I still love this movie and my heart skips a beat when I think Grace Kelly may die. Alfred Hitchcock was a master of his craft and revolutionized the suspense genre. While his movies may be tamer than today's horror standards, I think they still provide the viewer with a great who-dunnit storyline.
But back to Rear Window and its female lead, Grace Kelly, for whom this post is about. Grace Kelly was no where near as famous as she would go on to become when she was cast for Rear Window. In fact, she had only appeared in 4 other pictures, but soon was a recurring female lead for Alfred Hitchcock. She just exuded grace and elegance on screen. When I commented on how beautiful and elegant she was during the movie, my husband had to agree. She was the female lead that women wanted to and still want to be, and men adored. And more importantly perhaps, her costume wardrobe throughout Hitchcock's films are still desired by women today.
Ever time I watch her in a Hitchcock film, I always end up googling her dresses to see if there is a pattern somewhere for it. Instead in an effort to emulate her looks for today, I share with you my two favorite looks from Rear Window and how to translate them to today.

The first look is the Paris Dress from Edith Head. It is the dress in which we are introduced to Kelly in the film. With tulle skirts being popular in recent seasons, it is possible to recreate this look for a number of budgets.

The second look is Kelly's outfit at the end of the film. It is one of the few times we see her so casually dressed, but still she exudes elegance, even in boyfriend jeans and a menswear top. This look is probably very easy to recreate out of items you already own with just a few updates or purchases.
