Holiday Gift Guide - The Monogram

Monograms make the perfect holiday gift. They are thoughtful, take time to plan and so very personal. You can find great monogrammed gifts almost everywhere, but my favorites have to be Marley Lilly, Personalized From Me To You,  Design Darling and Mark and Graham. You can also find great gifts on Etsy or even monogram items from J.Crew or most of the C.Wonder store at their Monogram Shop.

Make your favorite gal or guy's holiday with monogrammed gifts like these:

Creating Your Own Apartment Gallery

Dan and I love to fill our home with art and photos of friends and family. We like to collect photographs and artwork from each place we have traveled to and as a result have built a gallery wall at the top of the stairs that I love to look everyday.
Part of our gallery wall
The most important thing to consider in a gallery wall is variety. Mix up the types artwork you use. We  have a mix of blocks, photographs, canvas prints, diplomas, pottery and memorabilia. Just include what is important to you so that each time you look at it, you get happiness from what you have included.
The wall.
Some of my favorite pieces on the wall are  these photo blocks from New Zealand, my autographed baseball card from Bill Buckner, this photo of my grandfather and uncle in the meat packing plant, and our how we met canvas print.
My blocks from New Zealand and my Bill Buckner card.

My grandfather and uncle working at the plant, Sarah and I in college,
a slumped Japanese beer bottle, a canvas print of Seattle,
my Chi Omega Initiation certificate and a print
of three girls that remind me of my childhood best friends, Katie and Emily.

The Story of Us Canvas Print.
On the wall we also have multiple frames containing photos of Dan and I that show the development of our relationship over the years. I love looking at them as they remind me of all the great adventures we have had over the course of our lives together.
The adventures of Liz and Dan.
What would you include on your gallery wall?

The One With The Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone. I hope your day is filled with family and friends, delicious food, lots to drink, and football of course. Dan and I are off to meet my family at the airport and then head to his sister's house for Thanksgiving dinner. We will most likely play a late night game of poker, take a hike and rest in the hot tub as well!

Then Friday will arrive and the ladies will hit the stores in the late morning while the men do men things (not sure what that will entail) and then we are back to LA for the night to celebrate Dan's birthday a little early.

Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday of your own!

Michael Buble Date Night

On Sunday night Dan accompanied me to the Michael Buble concert last minute after changes in plans. He was a great sport stepping in to do something that he had really no interest in. You have to know you have a great spouse when they do something just to make you happy.

I know I said last week that I was originally supposed to bring my nephew, Max, but his mom had bought tickets as well and had extras so they ended up taking Max and Dan was the great guy he is and came with me so I didn't have to go alone.
Dan was a great sport!
We got down to Anaheim early to meet the family for dinner at a Mexican restaurant and then were off to the main show. Naturally 7, an all male A Capella band, opened for Michael and were absolutely amazing! I was especially impressed by the one guy who used his vocals to be the bass and the other who was the drums. They were awe inspiring honestly.

Then it was time for the main show. Michael Buble is an amazing entertainer. He is so much more than his music. He is honestly hilarious. Dan even admitted that he liked Buble after the show because he seemed like a guy you just wanted to go drinking with. I felt like I was at a modern Sinatra show, the way he used to banter with the audience between sets.
Buble rocking it out.
He also closed the show by singing solo without any mics or music. Just his voice filling the entire arena. It gave me chills. If you have the opportunity to go to a Buble show, don't hesitate, just go. He will change your outlook on him. Dan is impressed by the Bubs now and is set on him recording a Bond song sometime soon.

A Black Friday Shoppers' Survival Guide

Black Friday Survival Guide

Black Friday is almost upon us, especially because this year most stores open on Thanksgiving Day. I don't know about most of you, but I just don't want to break away from Thanksgiving festivities to go shopping on Thursday.

Since I've been going to Thanksgiving with Dan's family, I have started to go shopping on Black Friday though. It has kind of become a girl's tradition every year. As a result I picked up some tips from the last few years.

If you are going for the open and doorbuster deals:
1. If you want a door buster deal, you have to be there early. Dan and I did this once when we were dating at Target when he needed a new TV. We got there around midnight, set up and waitied it out until 4am. Now this isn't so bad living in Southern California (I don't know if I could do this living anywhere else.)

2. If limited quanities, know the store layout and divide and conquer. We knew Target had two TVs on sale only 25 of each. Check those flyers to see the quanities so you know which items to grab first. We then each went for one TV and regrouped.

3. If limited quanities, grab both and narrow down your decision as you do the rest of your shopping. If you can grab two similar items and then make a decision do it. Don't feel guilty, you want to avoid buyer's remorse if you feel you should have gone for the other one.

If you are going later in the day:
1. Crowds are not that bad later in the morning. I am hoping this is even more the case due to opening on Thanksgiving Day this year.

2. Deals last until about 1pm. Be strategic about what stores you are going to hit before 1pm when the biggest deals end. Almost every store is offering some sort of discount all day, so priortize the ones with time limits first.

3. Have a list. Have at least a list of everyone you still need to buy for so you don't go overboard. You don't want to end up with extra stuff for no reason.

4. Hydrate and Caffinate. Grab coffee on your way and drink plenty of water. Make sure you have snacks in your bag too. No one likes a cranky shopper. And nice shoppers get treated better by store clerks.

5. Have fun! If you don't find everything on your list thats ok. Enjoy the time and go shopping with friends or family. Make it a social event rather than a sprint. It's the holidays after all.

6. Treat Yourself Too! Who said you can't also pick up a little something to reward all your hard work?

Perfect Thanksgiving Looks

Thanksgiving is almost upon us and perhaps as important as the food you will be cooking is what you will be wearing to dinner. I always strive to be classy but comfortable as after dinner there is nothing better than resting and not feeling like your clothes are two sizes to small.  I love skinnies with good stretch and a flowy blouse, or a great a-line skirt with slouchy sweater. Dresses are also a great option as are crop pants with great heels.

What will you be wearing to the dinner table?

Coats for SoCal Winters

I love living in Southern California, but after five years I am definitely noticing my blood has thinned out quite a bit from when I used to live in NYC and Boston. When I first moved here I barely wore any sort of outerwear during the winter months because I was still positive that 40's and 50's were just sweatshirt weather. Now I am finding low 60's to be fall jacket weather and the 40's and 50's needing of a light winter coat. I try to look for pieces that are lightweight wools but that can transition to NY temperatures with just another layer since we go back to NY every Christmas.

Now I should come clean that I am an outerwear lover even though it's not as necessary anymore. I have tons of beautiful coats that I used to wear throughout NYC and Boston winters since your coat was often the only part of an outfit anyone ever saw. I still like to layer with coats these days but I have to remind myself to grab one because so much of the year I never wear anything heavier than a light blazer or sweater.

What I'm Loving.. Perfect SoCal Weather Outerwear

1 Banana Republic Bow Belt Jacket ($198) // I am obsessed with this jacket. It looks so amazing on and the color is perfect for the winter months. Creamy and elegant. It is also a nice lightweight so I can easily transition this from Cali Winter to NY Winter with just a sweater layered. Only XS-M is still available online but check with your store. They can check other stores stock and have it shipped directly from store! I picked this nugget up during their 40% off all outerwear sale and I am thrilled with it!
2 J.Crew Factory Belted Cashmere Wool  Blend Coat ($114 - Similar) // This coat comes in and out of availability online, so be sure to check back if its something you are interested in. The color in person is much more vibrant then online. I personally think this coat actually looks best open (you can remove the belt) and also comes in camel which is still available currently.
3 J.Crew Downtown Field Jacket ($148) // Still available in petite and tall sizes. It also comes in Navy. I love this jacket (I have it in  both colors) and it is perfect for wearing to the office and then throwing over my workout gear after the gym. It transitions all types of outfits and is just perfect. It is more ideal for fall and warmer winter days. Cannot get enough of it.
4 Banana Republic Cobalt Wool Coat ($225) // This color is beautiful. It actually reminds me of a Zara coat my sister owns from a few seasons ago. I also love the length. Perfect for running around town while remaining quite ladylike!
5 J.Crew Colorblock Funnelneck Coat ($398) // This is a gorgeous coat and one that I would be less likely to purchase in Cali since it is hard to justify spending $300-$400 dollars on a coat you only wear 2-3 months of the year unlike most of the country. It is a great deal right now though with 25% off through November 24th! If you were waiting to pull the trigger now is the time!
6 Old Navy Cropped Pea Coat in Sea Salt ($35 On Sale!) // Love this in white for winter. It is really fresh and crisp and won't put any sort of dent in your wallet at this sale price! Also since you only wear this coat sparingly in Southern California, it will not show wear and tear for a while and can be a good deal for a few seasons!
7 Zara Checked Studio Jacket ($179) // I really like the fullness of this jacket. It is plaid which is one of my favorite prints during the holidays and has some nice detailing around the edging of the jacket. I really find Zara jackets a nice purchase that is on trend and looks great.
Zara Sheepskin Double Breasted Jacket ($119) // Love the tweed jacket with the sheepskin neck in a moto design. I feel like I would look cool and be warm all at the same time!
9 Gant Classic Quilted Vest ($250) // I really like this quilted vest from Gant because of all the feminine details like a nipped in waist. I could not bring myself to spend $250 on a vest though living out here and would gravitate more towards the J.Crew or Banana styles that are also not very puffy and more feminine looking. Still this is a classic style that looks great and a vest is a great option for the weather out here over a full jacket.

November Recipe Swap - Thanksgiving Sides

I love making Thanksgiving sides every year. My sister-in-law Julie is an amazing host but I love to be able to bring delicious food for everyone to enjoy. I am repeating some of my more popular sides from last year. The first is a corn custard that we learned from our family friend Trena. The second is an awesome recipe I found online a few years ago when I wanted to make a homemade Valentine's day dinner. It is Buffalo Chicken Jalapeno Popper Mac and Cheese, but for Thanksgiving I usually nix the chicken because we already have turkey and don't need another dish full of poultry. Finally, at my hubby's request, I am also going to make a grilled asparagus dish. It is shocking that he asked for this since he is not a vegetable eater, so I have to oblige.

I unfortunately have not made my sides yet, but wanted to share them in time in case anyone else wanted to make these dishes for their own Thanksgiving meal, so I had to borrow photos from other sources.
Corn Custard

Makes one 8x8 pan or 1 8in diameter pan.
Ingredients:
2 cans corn nibblets
2 eggs
1 cup cream
Salt and Pepper to Taste

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees.
2. Mix drained corn nibblets, 2 beaten eggs and 1 cup cream. Add salt and pepper to taste.
3. Pour into buttered baking dish
4. Bake for 25 minutes or until firm and golden brown on top.

Buffalo Chicken Jalapeno Popper Mac and Cheese (sans Chicken)
Decedent Mac. Photo Courtesy Of: Lauren's Latest
Serves 6-8 full size portions. Can stretch as a side.
Ingredients:
8 slices of bacon
2 tablespoons bacon grease {reserved from said bacon}
1/2 large onion, diced
3 jalapenos, sliced {ribs and seeds removed}
1 cup precooked and shredded chicken {optional}
1 pound rotini pasta (use what you prefer)
2 ounces cream cheese
1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup mild cheddar cheese
1 1/4 cup  mozzarella cheese
1 cup blue cheese crumbles
1 cup panko bread crumbs
1 tablespoon hot sauce, your favorite flavor
4 tablespoons butter
5 tablespoons all purpose flour
2 cups milk
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 pinch nutmeg
salt & pepper, to taste
parsley, for garnish

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lay parchment paper out on baking sheet. Place 8 bacon slices on parchment paper.
2. Cook bacon until crispy. About 20 minutes. Save about 2 tablespoons of bacon grease and set bacon aside.
3. Heat bacon grease in a skillet. Add onions and jalapenos and saute until soft. Approximately 6-8 minutes on medium heat. Set aside.
4. Meanwhile bring a large pot to boil. Salt water and add macaroni pasta. You can use any pasta you like. I like to use Rotini but you can use any similar style pasta.
5. Cook pasta to just under timing stated on box. About 2 minutes less. You want the pasta al dente since you are going to bake it afterwards. Drain pasta and set aside.
6. In pasta pot, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook 1-2 minutes. It should start to thicken up. Mix cream, milk, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Then whisk into butter flour mixture. Increase heat to medium high until the sauce is thick.
7. Move pot off  heat and add cream cheese and hot sauce until smooth and blended.
8. Add pasta and onion/jalapeno mixture into sauce. Stir to coat.
9. Meanwhile grate all your cheeses in advance. If you have a food processor use it! Fresh grated cheese is so nice and cheaper. I buy blocks of cheese and grate it myself.
10. Add the two cheddar cheeses, mozzarella cheese, and 1/4 to 1/3 cup of blue cheese. Stir until evenly distributed.
11. Pour into buttered dish about 9x13 in size. Then top with blue cheese, bacon and the panko bread crumbs.
12. Bake 20-30 minutes until browned. Then remove from oven and add parsley if you want.
You can make this ahead and then reheat in time for Thanksgiving. If you are doing a make ahead situation, cook under a little and then finish another 10 minutes.
Grilled Asparagus
Yum. Photo Courtesy Of: Simply Recipes

Serves 8-10: I try to have minimum 3 asparagus spears per person. Also the thinner the asparagus spears the better. They are way more tender than the thick ones.
Ingredients:
2-3 bunches asparagus
2 tablespoons minced garlic
2-4 tablespoons of olive oil
1/2 tsp garlic salt (add more if you like garlic)

1. Clean and snip the bottoms of asparagus. I like the snap method rather than using a knife to slice the bottoms, but it doesn't matter much.
2. Marinate the asparagus in olive oil, minced garlic and garlic salt. 5-10 minutes is sufficient
3. Place all the asparagus including the marinade in a grill pan. You want to get your grill pan on the stove when you start the marinade so that it is nice and hot when you put the asparagus down.
4. Rotate the asparagus so you get good grill marks on both sides. Cooking should be pretty quick, based on the size of the asparagus and if you like it crispy or softer. I like it crispier so I only cook them for 3-5 minutes.
5. Serve in a platter.

Top 10 Playlist - November Edition

Top 10 Playlist - November 2013

I am getting ready to take my nephew, Max, to the Michael Buble Concert in Anaheim tomorrow night and hence have only been rocking out to Michael Buble for weeks now. Max is six and knows like all his songs. It's amazing. I bought 2 tickets when his concert went on sale a few months back knowing that Dan would not want to go but figuring I could find someone. That is when I thought of Max. He is just as excited as I am! I am excited for a special night out with my nephew. I hope it is something he will remember for a long time!

Learning How to Knit

Over this past year I have undertaken a new hobby, knitting. I watched my grandmother knit for years. She makes the most adorable baby sweaters and beanies for all the newborn babies to family and friends. I also wanted another hobby that was relaxing and that I could do anywhere (long drives, watching TV or resting in bed). Now I know this penchant for knitting has resulted in me being called an old lady by my husband as well as strange looks from most Californians (knitting is not really popular here in Southland), but I just love it. It is peaceful and relaxing and allows me the opportunity to make some really heartfelt gifts. It also gives me a great opportunity to get away from technology for a while.

Right now I am working on a baby blanket for my friends' baby who is due in the next few months, as well as a number of gifts for this holiday. I definitely started out slow, working on scarves to start, but now have moved into hats and fancy patterns! In fact I finished a knit cap with a pom pom when we were babysitting our nephews and both immediately requested their own!
Dan and his hat.
As I have gotten more comfortable with knitting I also ventured into fancier materials. I had been keeping my yarn purchases exclusively to JoAnn's but recently ventured into this amazing yarn shop called Twist Yarns of Intrigue in Manhattan Beach and fell in love. All the yarns are hand-dyed and the owner is just the kindest and most helpful person ever!

The yarns of Twists of Intrigue
In addition, I recently joined Raverly.com, a great website that allows me to search for patterns by skill level, type and cost. A lot are even free! I got this tip from a really nice woman who I flew next to coming back from Baltimore a few weeks back. She is a native Angeleno who also knits and we struck up a conversation after I pulled out my knitting on the flight. The best news from the TSA is that you can bring your knitting on board. Flights are a great time to knock out a bunch of work. Another great option is the Lion Brand Yarn App, that my cousin Kristen suggested. It allows you to search by yarn gauge or type, difficulty level and type and all the patterns are free of cost.

Are any of you crafty? What do you do to let out your non-technological creativity!

Currently Craving.. The Full Skirt

Currently Craving... Full Skirts

I love a full skirt! It is so ladylike and the perfect balance for my full hips and butt. Does anyone know of any good ones out there? I've been on the hunt for weeks with no success. Thinking about going to hunt these two down to try on but would love suggestions!

Happy Birthday Emily - Temcula Wine Tasting

This past weekend we celebrated our friend Emily's 30th Birthday by doing a wine tasting tour of Temecula, the nearby wine country of Southern California. We visited a number of vineyards and wineries, including Callaway, Maurice Car'rieWilson Creek, Pulombo Family and Wiens Vineyard as well as Weins Brewery.

Sarah, Emily (The Birthday Girl) and myself at Callaway.
Emily's wonderful husband Peter rented a van and escorted us all around Temecula for the day. He for sure is owed a major gold star for being our day long designated driver. Our first stop was Callaway Vineyards where we enjoyed a great tasting to get the day kicked off right. It is beautiful there and the tasting bar is long and easy to maneuver. I picked up a bottle of Rose for when my family comes to visit next week, since it is one of my dad's favorite.

Nate, Peter, Dan and Gerald (front) at Callaway.
We then moved on to Maurice Car'rie for a delicious brie bowl and some more wine. The wines there are definitely on the sweet side and while the brie bowl is killer, the wine left something to be desired for me since I am a dry wine fan. Still they gave us tons of free tastes and you got to keep the wine glass. They did also carry some killer wine accessories here.

Nate and I at Maurice Car'rie enjoying some brie.
After brie bowls we hit Wilson Creek which is huge and a really fun place. Our server was great and gave us a few extra tastes since it was Emily's Birthday. I loved the wines, in particular the reds, although they are also very well known for their almond sparkling wine. I actually bought two bottles before we left!
The vines at Wilson Creek.
After Wilson Creek, it was on to Pulombo Family Vineyard which is a really tiny place that specializes only in red wines, which was perfect for me since that is my preference. Peter's brother Andy and his wife Erin met us at Pulombo which was a nice way to round out our group.
Sunset at Pulombo Vineyard
We finally hit Wiens Vineyard where Andy and Erin were married a year ago. Andy and Erin are club members here and were able to give us the down low on a lot of their wines. Here I was able to get a great bottle of red that should be outstanding in about 6 months.
Nate, Dan, Gerald and I at the end of a long day of tastings.
Our last stop was the Wiens Brewery as a treat for Peter. We were able to taste some craft beers as well as some chili's made with the brews.

We were then off to dinner and back to Los Angeles. It was a great day and all my bottles of wine are happily in our wine fridge chilling for the perfect moment to drink up! We are also very well stocked with some throwaway glasses now. Everywhere but Callaway gave us a glass to take home! Woot!

Wednesday Wishes.. Deck the Halls

Today's Wednesday Wishes is all about decking the halls for this holiday season. Since Thanksgiving is late this year, I find myself in the Christmas spirit a little earlier this year. We actually put up the tree this Sunday (although we are waiting to decorate it until this weekend). I also put up the cranberry garland and wreath and Christmas Story Old Man Bobblehead as well as our stockings. I love how festive our house becomes during the Christmas season and love decorating and wrapping gifts for under the tree.

Therefore my Wednesday wishes today are all about decorations and gift wrap. The things that bring cheer to the home this season! What are your favorite items that set the holiday mood?

A Little Weekend Getaway

Love Love Loving Weekender Bags

I have a serious case of Wanderlust right now. I would love a mini getaway like a weekend away with Dan. The holidays are always crazy and it is nice to get away just the two of use. I would take a trip to Hearst Castle or travel up CA-1 again. Dan surprised me a few years ago with a lats minute trip up Route 1 for what he called an AdventureRomantic Weekend. I would love to get in the car and recreate that trip right now and these weekender bags are perfect for the trip. I am especially in love with the Marley Lilly Monogrammed weekender and the Hogwarts House Weekender (I am a nerd at heart). What do you throw your stuff in when you hit the road for a quick trip?

Meet Nautical By Nature - Blogger Q&A

Kate's blog Nautical by Nature was one of the first blogs I ever started reading. I love how she finds amazing nautically themed pieces at all price points. She doesn't just limit her blog to fashion but also branches frequently into home goods, organization, travel and everything baby. She is not only blogger but also takes care of her adorable nephew and she shares all her great tips and tricks she has learned working with toddlers.

The lovely Kate of Nautical by Nature
Kate and I realized we both lived in LA a few months ago and decided it was important for us LA blogging gals to stick together. We both share a strong love of the Fall (and east coast weather) as well as everything preppy and nautical. So this collaboration is our first endeavor into working together more.

Describe your personal style in three words.
1. nautical
2. comfortable
3. toddler friendly

I can’t leave home without: my phone, lotion, chapstick, some kind of snack

If I were any accessory, I would be: a headband with a big bow

What are your three favorite places to shop?
1. J.Crew
2. Vineyard Vines
3. Bloomingdales

What is your favorite travel outfit? J.Crew popover shirt, Gap ponte legging jeans, and flip flops or ballet flats

What outfit do you go to when you want to feel strong and powerful? I feel the most confident when I am wearing something I feel comfortable in whether it's jeans and a t shirt or my go to LBD

What is your go-to handbag right now? During the week I use a Vineyard Vines tote because it can hold a ton (now that I don't have to carry a separate diaper bag) and all of the pockets keep me organized in my job as a nanny. On the weekends I switch to a Juicy Couture bag (with an anchor) or Tory Burch Amanda crossbody bag (both of them are much smaller!)

Remembering to be Thankful

With the holiday season upon us, I feel that is essential for each of us to be mindful of all the great things in our lives and not get too caught up in the craziness of the  holidays and how it can make people sad. I love the holidays and am always surprised that they can be serious downers for people, but I think for that reason it is all the more essential to be thankful for everything we value.

For me, I think I am most thankful for two things. My friends and family, who are absolute rocks in my life. My husband keeps me grounded and sane, while family is just a constant source of support. My dad is my twin and my sister is my best friend. My mom keeps me balanced and my in-laws are all amazing. I am lucky to have such amazing extended families on both sides.
My dad, sister, myself and Mom on our family trip to Alaska.

Uncle Marc, Aunt Bern, Dan, Kristen and myself.
Friends are also a huge source of love and support. My friends always joke that I am glue that keeps our groups of friends together, and while that role can be tiring and you can start to resent being the planner of the group all the time, I am glad I have this opportunity to remind myself that it is so special to have such a far reaching group of friends and that being the glue brings you so much closer to each friend you have. I am thankful that I am the GLUE!

At the Ugly Sweater Party last year.
A few of my best girlfriends in the entire world. Suzanne, my Cousin Kristen,
Sarah, my sister Dominique, myself and Jackie.
The other thing I am really thankful for is modern medicine. I have a sports problem which I got from my dad. I don't know how to go less than all out and as a result it has led to some pretty rough injuries for my throughout my life. I am glad I had knee surgery now than years ago and that I am a healthy individual who heals at a pretty fast rate. I am also unbelievably thankful for modern medicine for another reasons. My dad, the summer before my freshman year of high school, had a pseudo brain aneurysm after running through a fence playing hardball. (See where the not going less than all out comes from!) I almost lost my dad that summer multiple times, and if it wasn't for the amazing brain surgeons and doctors who cared for  him for weeks and years after, I would not have been able to have my dad walk me down the aisle or have a father daughter dance. My dad is one of my best friends. My sister and mom joke that we are geeks and we are OK with that. We are the science loving, bookworm types and I am so glad I didn't lose all those precious years with him.

I was especially inspired to write this post when fellow blogger, Heather, reached out to me to share her story. Heather is an 8-year survivor of mesothelioma – a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure. When she was diagnosed, she had just given birth to my little girl and was told had 15 months to live.  Her cancer story is so astonishing since a long-term survival story due to mesothelioma is unheard of.

Since Heather received her diagnosis in November, she said she used to get sad around the holidays and as a result decided to combat those sad feelings by creating the "30 Days of Thankfulness." You may be noticing other bloggers and friends on Facebook writing what they are thankful for everyday this month. Well, Heather is why.

She is really an inspiration as someone who has taken a diagnosis she still carries everyday, and found the silver lining. If you want to learn more about Heather's story, visit her page here: mesothelioma.com/heather.

So what are you thankful for today?
