Reading: Yes, Please by Amy Poehler. I love Amy Poehler. I was so sad to see the end of Parks and Rec and I thought that diving into her book would help ease the pain. It has been really enjoyable thus far and a great read when traveling because it's easy to pick up and put down whenever you have time.

Eating: Chocolate cake. I have been noshing on leftover chocolate cake from my shower. Absolute perfection.

Listening: Disney tunes. I have been getting in mommy mode by singing along to disney tunes in the car.

Watching: The Following on Hulu. I loved the first two seasons and was really curious where they would be able to go after the end of Season 2. I don't want to give anything away but I am anxiously wondering what will happen to Ryan Hardy and his team next.

Craving: These ballet pink Tieks. I hear these are the most comfortable flats and I keep wondering if I should take the plunge on a pair. Anyone have any personal experiences with them?

Dreaming: Of baby carrying. I cannot wait to wear my girl around town and explore with her!

Red Eye Survival Guide

The Red Eye is one of our go-to flights when traveling back East to see my family. Living on the West Coast means that a midday flight takes all day, rather than a red eye meaning that you will just wake up in the morning at your destination. I realize that our flying patterns may change with a new baby (everyone hates babies on the red eye), I am sure there will be times when the red eye is still our best option for our schedules and lives. But how to make the most of the red eye and not feel like you are dragging the next day? Here are a few tips I have picked up over the years.

Moisturize. Your skin gets dry on flights, moisturizing before, during and after the flight will keep your skin feeling refreshed. Pay attention to your face, hands and lips in particular.

Bring hydration on the flight. Yes you can get water on the flight, but since you will most likely be dozing off here and there, its so much easier to have your own water to sip at whenever you stir.

Eat before hand. Eat before your flight and pack a snack for when you wake up in the morning. You don't know how long it will be before you can eat breakfast.

Bring headphones, earplugs, an eye mask and a book. You don't want to overstimulate yourself when you are trying to grab some shut eye, but you do want to have stuff that will make sleeping easier. If you like listening to music to drown out the airplane noises, put on a classical playlist. If you prefer silence, grab some earplugs (because its not the baby's fault it's crying). If you need it to be darker, pack an eye mask. And always, always have a book. If you are having a hard time sleeping watching tv or playing on your ipad will just continue to stimulate. Read a book or count some sheep.

Comfy socks and a blanket scarf should be your best friend. I get it. It's a long flight and you want to take off your shoes, but if you are gonna do that, bring slippers or thick socks so that people don't need to smell your feet. Also always wear a blanket scarf no matter the season. It doubles as the perfect blanket for the flight since airlines will almost never have blankets.

What are your tips for a red eye?

My favorite post of the month is back. It's time for March's Currently edition.

Reading: Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell. I am a huge fan of the movie and always wanted to read the book, so I decided what time is better than the present. The great thing about having it on my Kindle is that I never have to carry around a big book!

Eating: Wonderful FroYo. Soft serve has been my absolute favorite lately. Whether its frozen yogurt, ice cream or a Frosty from Wendy's. It's so satisfying.

Listening: Disney tunes. I drove 3.5 hours back and forth to a conference last weekend and I rocked out to Disney all the way. I am already looking forward to singing Disney music with my girl in the car.

Watching: House of Cards. Honestly, who isn't? I hope that they will decide to do a fourth season... Whose with me?

Craving: Of sleep! My best sleep has been in the AM when baby girl is finally asleep with me. I also think my energy is starting to ramp back down as I head into the tail end of my second trimester. No good!

Dreaming: Of my baby girl. Her nursery is coming together. We just still need to finish decorating. Right now the paint and furniture are all in place. I am also working on making her knit baby blocks and a chevron baby blanket. I love being crafty when it comes to her.

What makes your Currently list this month?

Aspen Recap

Dan and my sister Dominique
I had such a great time with my family in Aspen last week. Even though I could not ski, it was great to spend some quality time with my family and relax just me and my girl.

My parents
I started working on knit baby blocks for her room that will spell her name. I need to make 42 panels each with a different letter to get her first and middle names covered as well as the rest of the alphabet, so I took advantage of the time off to get knitting. So far I have 10 panels done. Each one takes about an hour and a half but I am really enjoying the project so far!

The weather was beautiful in Aspen even though the snow was only so so. Still it was nice to unplug and get away from it all. I got some work done each day in the morning but had the afternoons to just relax. Exactly what I needed!

10 Great Date Ideas

10 Great Date Ideas

10 Great Date Ideas by preppy-lizzy

Love has been in the air since Valentine's Day and as Dan and I prepare to welcome our little nugget this summer, we are soaking up some time to get in some dates before we are a family of three. Over the last few years we have come up with some pretty great dates ideas, that I wanted to share with you all. I would also appreciate suggestions for other date ideas!

1. Go Dancing - Head out just the two of you for drinks and dancing at one of your favorite places. A great way to reconnect with one another.

2. Knock off a Bucket List Item - Find something that you have never done and always have wanted to. Dan and I went skydiving for our anniversary, something we both had on our bucket list.

3. Take a Cooking Class - Go make sushi rolls together or a baking class. Get out of your comfort zone together.

4. Drive-In Movie - Find an old drive in movie theatre and take in a double feature. In LA you can find a few near the City of Industry that are still in operation.

5. Take A Walk - Go take a hike or a walk along the beach and talk. Catch up with your love.

6. Play Tourist in Your City - Go to a tourist destination in your own city. In LA you can try Disneyland, The Getty Center, Griffith Observatory, just to name a few.

7. Watch the Planes Land - If you live near a major airport (or really any airport with a decent amount of traffic), bring a picnic and watch the planes land.

8. Brunch - A great way to try out restaurants in your area that you have been wanting to. Enjoy a mimosa or two together as well.

9. Scavenger Hunt - Groupon always has good deals on city scavenger hunts. Or you can look online for an easy photo hunt you can do together wherever you live.

10. Game Night - Break out the board games and card games, order a pizza and make each other laugh by playing games.

Enjoy!

Beauty Tips for Winter Activities

via
A few months ago I was approached by the publicist for Stacy Cox about sharing some winter skin tips. I knew of Stacy from her work on Dr. Oz as a correspondent and I was curious. Would she share some tips that I didn't already know of?

Living in Southern California for a while now, I have not gotten as diligent about taking care of my winter skin as I did when living in NYC, because the temperatures never dropped enough or the air never got dry enough to really dry me out.

Some of my tried and true tips still are to remember to:
1. Exfoliate by using my Clarisonic Mia Brush daily
2. Moisturize my face morning and night (and never forget my eye cream)
3. Moisturize my body as soon as I step out of the shower (while my pores are bigger and soaking in the cream)
4. Always go to bed with Bag Balm on (my diehard love of Bag Balm cannot be topped)
5. Carry shea butter cream and lip balm in my purse at all times (I love the EOS Sweet Mint)

Still there are often times I find myself dried out regardless of my efforts and because we still go skiing for a week every year, I figured I'd share the tips Stacy shared with me.

Ski Skin Survival
Let’s face it: the age-old question of how to look younger is something asked every day. In fact it always garners the most interest and simultaneously the most skepticism.

So, when temperatures drop and skin becomes dry, chapped and raw and you’re thinking about the must-have solutions to “shed the dead skin cells,” turning back the clock inevitably comes up.

Here are some of my’s top winter skincare anti-aging tips from my own test and trials to share with you:

  1. Seek Brands That Offer The "Full Package": Skincare brands have to be both esthetician AND HERBALIST (no more skin care lines offering just lotions and potions or supplements with their spin on anti-aging)! Try SeabuckWonders both parts of the line infuse us with fatty acids, A.K.A the Omegas 3, 6 and 9, which is great because, as we age, we are sorely lacking in these to support our collagen and elastin. SeabuckWonders also pushes the envelop by adding in Omega 7 and delivers the highest concentration of it on the market, as well as boasting Vitamin C, B1, B6 and Beta Carotene that bring nourishment to wrinkles and fine lines at the root source. It's a one/two punch that works.

  2. Juicing Is No Longer A Fad! It’s Here To Stay: Not everyone’s budgets can dictate a daily or weekly trip to juice-a-rama destinations, but fear not, I have the perfect home-based FYI solution. Check out Pines: The Wheat Grass People. In less than a minute a day and for about 25 cents per day, you can have a serving of wheat grass with the same nutrition as a serving of spinach. The Beet Juice Powder is another standout product from the brand high in lycopene and lutein, which are both players in the anti-aging game for optimal skin health.

  3. If Cleopatra Used It...Move Over Cleo...So Are We!: Green Virgin Moringa Oil has been used for thousands of years and was found in the tombs of the pharaohs and ancient Egyptians. The thing I love about this workhorse of a beauty product is that it leaves skin noticeably soft and healthy. Lots of the pricy skin care companies are including it in their ingredient lists. It absorbs so swiftly that the moisturizing effect can't be washed off like almost all moisturizers. And you can multi-task with this bad boy and use in your hair. Apply it to damp hair and comb in to disperse it. It also has the ability to work a little magic on cold sores once applied to them. Give it 24 hours and you'll be in a better place.
I have not been able to try all the products she recommended, but I do find that looking for similar products to the ones she shares have been beneficial. I am looking forward to using more of this advice on my upcoming trip! It's like having a personal Dr. Oz segment!

What's in my Bag? Aspen Edition

What's in my Bag? Aspen Edition

Aspen is upon us and I was busy this past week getting all ready. Since I can't ski and Colorado is currently experiencing a heat wave, my activities will be limited while my family is out on the slopes so I am making sure to pack a variety of things to entertain myself. I'm looking forward to swimming in the heated pool, taking walks around town, getting a sightseeing pass to go take photos of the mountain with my camera, catch up on blogging, reading on my kindle and knitting baby blocks for my little girl. I am making blocks that will spell out her name, so this is a perfect opportunity to make some headway. Follow me on Instagram to catch all my snaps from my time in Aspen!

Ski Trip Tips & Tricks

Ski Tips & Tricks

We are hitting the slopes of Aspen this week and with any good ski trip, being prepared is key. Skiing is a great sport but it comes with its own risks that it pays to be prepared for. I am so bummed out that I don't get to ski this year but the risk of hurting our little lady is just not worth it.

I have been skiing since I was about three years old and since that time have helped a lot of my friends learn to ski. I also have seen what happens when you try to progress too quickly. Here are some of my favorite tips for beginning skiers.

1. Don't ski above your level. Don't just go up to the top. It's not only about your safety here but about those around you. An inexperienced skier going to the top of the mountain puts everyone ahead of them on the trail at risk. So many skiing accidents come out of inexperienced skiers taking out other skiers on their trail of destruction down the mountain. Be respectful of those around you and only ski on trails you are capable of.

2. Always wear a helmet. Helmets not only protect you from hitting your head on minor falls, but protect you and your head from accidents and collisions with other skiers. Almost everyone wears them now, but it wasn't so common when I was a kid. You can even rent helmets when renting skis if you don't have your own gear.

3. Ski only at speed you can control yourself. Don't ski to quickly. Learn to make your turns well and control your speed. A good lesson to live by is to only ski at speeds where you are still in control.

4. Learn to stop before leaving the bunny hill. I had a friend who was a decent skier. She had control going down the hill and decent form but could not stop. Like the kid in D2 who couldn't perform a hockey stop, she would yard sale at the end of every trip. Stopping is key skill to be learned on the bunny slope.

5. Wait on the poles. Probably the hardest thing to tell an adult learning how to ski, but poles are more of a hinderance when learning than a help. Our reaction is to rely on them to stop and often they get tangled in your legs when skiing, causing more falls and accidents. Instead, learning to ski without poles teaches you to focus on your balance and shifting your weight to turn rather than try to have the poles do it for you.

LA Guide

I really do love LA. A different beast from the City that Never Sleeps, my hometown, NYC, LA is still a great place to live. With the ability to be outside year round and all the activities constantly taking place around the city, there is always something you could do. It is also a great place to live partly because it is so spread out. Yes that can make it a hassle to travel from place to place with traffic, but it also allows you to experience a number of different cultures all over the city.

With this in mind, I wanted to share my list of favorite LA hot spots from all over the city.

Adventure
Trapeze School New York in Santa Monica: My sister in law and brother in law treated the whole family to trapeze lessons a few Christmases ago and it was a huge hit. Dan and I actually signed up for another class and got one free in the process (its called their catch and return program). It is a great way to get your bodies moving and have a different kind of date night. We still have our free class to use (We are planning on using it post baby as a date night!)

Scuba Diving with PCH Scuba: Getting open water certified is a great way to take advantage of all LA has to offer. Over two weekends you can get your certification, which includes your second weekend at Catalina Island diving off Casino Point. I have been sidelined for about 2 years now due to 2 knee surgeries and pregnancy, but I cannot wait to get back in the water. I've worked with PCH as a divemaster in the past and cannot recommend them enough!

Segway Tours: We did this for my birthday when my mom visited us a few years ago and it was a blast. You get a chance to play tourist in a part of your city that you never have had the chance to before and riding a Segway is pretty fun. We took our tour with Another Side of Los Angeles Tours and I cannot recommend them enough!

Jetpack America: A little outside of the LA bubble in Newport Beach, Jetpack America actually gives you the opportunity to fly your own jetpack powered by water. After a short training session you are out in the water and flying high. Depending on how quickly you pick up the controls, your instructor will let you get 20+ feet in the air!

Beaches
Hermosa Beach: Hermosa is my favorite with super wide beaches, tons of volleyball courts, clean public restrooms, a popular walking/bike path, decent surf and a wonderful pier with food and drink options readily available. There is a large mix of young singles and families out here, but the beach can get crowded quickly.

Manhattan Beach: A little quieter with more families and less singles, this is a nice change of pace. The pier is uphill from the beach so it requires a bit more walking but the beach is wide like in Hermosa and has the bike path and public restrooms easily accessible as well as some more volleyball courts.

Redondo Beach: This beach is not as wide as Hermosa but is walking distance. It gets more crowded faster so I typically head here during the week after hours for a sunset or to read my book. It has easy diving off the coast here and the bike path continues to the end of the beach. There is also a pier here with some more quick food options than Hermosa or Redondo's restaurants.

Culture
The Getty Center: Beautiful Architecture, up in the hills of Los Angeles, the Getty has amazing views and an even better garden.

La Brea Tar Pits: Something unique to LA and fun for kids and adults alike. There are also some museums on site in addition to the park. There is a lot to learn and its pretty hands on.

LACMA: This museum has so much to boot and exhibits change pretty frequently. We were members for a year and got all the exhibits free as well as free admission any time. It is a fun place and great for different date nights to get you out of your bubble.

LA Zoo: In Griffith park, the LA Zoo is a really fun afternoon, especially if you have kids to bring along!

Staples Center: Between concerts, Kings games and Clipper Games, there is always something going on.

Dodgers Stadium: Who doesn't love catching a game come Spring and Summer?

KTown: Korea Town is a great place to get some Korean BBQ and/or hit up some karaoke with friends. Most karaoke bars are ones where your group gets their own room and can make a fool of themselves with each other.

Food
Farmer's Market at the Grove: I love the Farmer's Market, especially when I have a group visiting, since everyone can pick their own meal. With tons of options to choose from, everyone will be happy.

Bottega Louie: In downtown LA, Bottega Louie serves up delicious Italian fare and perhaps even more delicious deserts. You can't really go wrong with what you order. Just keep in mind that the place can get pretty loud and busy, especially on weekends.

Ortega 120: My favorite Mexican restaurant in LA, hands down. The food is Mexican with a finer hand but everything, including the drinks are to die for. Go for the Tilapia 120 if you like fish, it's my favorite thing on the menu. Brunch is also a great option here and a really great deal!

In and Out Burger: So good and fresh. Just find one and go.

Diddy Riese: This Brentwood staple is a go to for desert. You get to choose your own ice cream and cookie for a wonderful handmade ice cream cookie. Lines can get long but its worth the wait.

Handel's Ice Cream: Family owned, this South Redondo Beach shop has been around for years and has lines year round. Homemade ice cream flavors make this a great stop. Graham Central Station is my favorite (its a graham cracker ice cream with chocolate pieces). When Girl Scout cookies are out, they also make flavors around the cookies. If you go with a group, get a sampler. It's four scoops for $5.

Outdoors
Malibu: There are tons of great hiking spots in the Malibu canyons. Parking can be challenging on the weekends, but the views of the ocean are worth it.

Hollywood Sign: Almost always hot as most of the trail is in the sun, you still get great views of the city and get get pretty close to the sign. The biggest pain here is parking.

Palos Verdes: PV has some beautiful cliff side trails and some that go down to the ocean. A little quieter than the Malibu trails, PV has some great views of Catalina on clear days.

Griffith Park: LA's version of Central Park, Griffith Park has tons of green space as well as the LA Zoo and Observiatory.

Shopping
The Grove: One of my favorite places to shop, the Grove is an outdoor mall with some of my favorite stores including, J.Crew, Banana Republic and Nordstrom. It can get crowded because its not a huge space. But it is really pretty and the Farmer's Market is next door!

3rd Street Promenade: I think I love coming up to Santa Monica to shop because it reminds me so much of shopping in NY. I love that the promenade is just a few city blocks packed with stores. It feels more like home to me.

Del Amo Fashion Center: Undergoing major renovations, this mall will be beautiful when it is all done. The renovations are going through stages and the new Nordstrom is being built. It's super convient for me travel wise, but it also has a ton of selection.

South Coast Plaza: Not technically in LA, South Coast Plaza has pretty much any store you can think of. It is great for Christmas shopping as even though it gets crowded, there are so many stores, you don't feel like you will never get helped.

Fashion Island: This is also in Orange County but I love that the entire shopping center is outdoors. It also has one of my favorite stores, Vineyard Vines.

Nearby
Las Vegas: About four hours by car or an hour by plane, Las Vegas is a frequent weekend getaway for LA residents.

Temecula Wine Country: Much closer than Napa, Temecula is a great getaway for a day with friends. A lot of vineyards are here, making it a much closer wine tasting trip.

Catalina Island: Just a short ferry ride away, Catalina is like going back in time. Great for a day visit or maybe one night, there is a lot to do in this little island.

Orange County: About an hour from LA, Orange County has some great beach towns, including Laguna Beach.

San Diego: About a 2 hour drive, San Diego has a lot to offer including great diving, fun nightlife and beautiful beaches.

Disneyland: Not too far from the original Happiest Place on Earth.

Big Bear: Skiing is just a few hours drive.

Big Bear Christmas

This year we started a new tradition in my husband's family by renting a cabin in Big Bear the weekend before Christmas. We were all together for 4 days with my mother-in-law's family and her sister, Maureen's family. It was perfect! We rented this super cool cabin that had a game room, 5 bedrooms able to sleep 12, a fireplace and spa for 6-8 people. A bunch of the crew was also able to go skiing.

The weekend was complete with skiing, a family photoshoot in the woods and on the lake, lots of home cooked meals, touring Big Bear Village and quality time galore in the form of board games, movies and an early Christmas morning opening gifts. We are already planning on returning next year!

Packing for the Holidays

Packing for the Holidays

The holiday travel season is upon us and with that lots of travel. Whether it is by car, plane or train, lots of us will be traveling. This past weekend Dan and I were up in Big Bear Lake with Dan's family for Christmas and then we are off to NY to celebrate with my family. When planning for so much back to back Christmas cheer, getting good about packing is a necessity.

We have also learned to leave as much stuff in NY that we don't need except when we are there, like our ice skates, snow boots and old jackets. Because of that we don't need to travel with as much. We also take advantage of shipping gifts ahead of us and then packing a lightweight duffel to bring ours home, so we aren't having to pay baggage fees going each way.

We also try to take advantage of the fact that we have washer/dryers wherever we are, so we can of course pack less. Packing layers also allows us to have less in our suitcases. I know this sounds counter intuitive but in fact it allows us to transition from the warm cozy cabin to the snow without having to do a total change.

Today is a crazy day for us as we are going to be unpacking and packing in one fell swoop. But sometimes that's better cause you are already in a packing mood!

What are some of your holiday packing tips?

Wedding Ettiquite 101

Wedding Etiquette 101

So after a wedding marathon this year, I thought it was time to share some serious wedding etiquette that will take you from mediocre guest to killer guest.

1. Have a handful of dresses you can keep in rotation and pack 2. This will make sure you always have something to wear and that you will never clash with the bridesmaids.

2. Offer to help once. After that back off. If you are naturally a helpful person, feel free to offer the bride some help if you are buddies, but if she turns you down, don't hound her about it or ask again. She already has a lot on her plate.

3. Try to give the gift as close to the wedding as possible. Yes ettiqute says you have a year but a lot of couples will be taking advantage of registry completion discounts after the big day for items missing, so don't wait til everything is gone.

4. Don't go off registry. Speaking of gifts, stick to the registry or a gift card or cash. You really need to know someone well to go off registry. And if you do choose to take the risk, make sure its fully refundable and not just for store credit. Some couples may not love that same quirky boutique you like.

5. If you choose to bring your gift to the wedding, make sure it is small in size! Or take a photo and wrap it up. Remember the bride and groom now have to figure out how to get these large packages home.

6. Never ask to bring a guest or kids not listed on the invite. The names on your invitation are all the guests invited for your family. If you have a baby or a small child that you are bringing with you, ask about a babysitter or child care recommendations. And never ask to bring a plus one. The guest list is the hardest thing for a couple to decide upon. They already are missing friends they wish they had room for, so accommodating your plus one is a no go.

7. Party hard and dance it out, but make sure you are following the bride and grooms lead. Don't be hitting the dance floor before they even get the chance. It's not your day.

8. Do not play musical chairs at dinner. A lot of work went into the seating arrangements. Don't make a scene about it or cause any heartache or complaints getting back to the bride and groom. Don't love your seat? It's only dinner, you can make polite conversation and reunite with your pals on the dance floor.

What are your wedding tips?

#GIJimmyAndAnna

Last weekend Dan's cousin Jimmy married the wonderful Anna in Fredrick, MD. They met while attending Mount St. Mary's, just down the road from Gettysburg, PA, where my sister was at school at the same time. We in the family all believe they crossed paths at least once.
Banana Republic Sloan Dress, Kate Spade Sunglasses, Kate Spade Shoes, Men's Warehouse Suit and Shirt, Macy's Bowtie

The wedding was at the church on campus and was absolutely beautiful. My parents attended the wedding as well, so it was a huge family get together. Dan served as an usher with our older nephew, Jake, while our youngest nephew, Max, served as the ring bearer.

After the ceremony, we were all off to the reception where we ate a great dinner (killer crabcakes) and danced the night away. Anna was radiant in her dress and Jimmy dapper in his tuxedo. We are so lucky to have them nearby in San Diego, although we are all dreading when they need to move away once Jimmy gets his JAG assignment. Until then we are seeing them as much as possible.

Congrats to two of our favorite people!

#MrAndMrsSmall

This has been the week of weddings for us. Last weekend we were in Philadelphia for the wedding of Dan's college friend John and his now wife, Lindsey. John and Lindsey both went to Penn State like Dan but didn't start dating until they had both graduated.

Both wonderful friends to Dan and I, John was in our wedding as a groomsmen and for these nuptials Dan returned the favor. We flew into Philly on the redeye with friends Adam and Jacqui and then were off to drop Dan at the rehearsal. Post rehearsal, Dan and the best man, John's brother Mikey, retrieved me from the hotel and we were off the Rehearsal Luncheon.

Later that day the whole wedding reconvened at the bar to celebrate the bride and groom before the following day's festivities.

The wedding took place at a lovely estate. The ceremony was outdoors followed by dinner and dancing in the mansion. It was perfect. The parents even had a surprise for the bride and groom, performing a choreographed couples dance. It was a great night, full of great friends, tasty treats and so much dancing! Congrats John and Lindsey!
