What's On My Kindle? - December 2013

What's Been on my Kindle? - December 2013

What's On My Kindle?

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
I have been wanting to reread this classic for a while now. I feel like the first time I read this story, I was young and maybe even read the abridged version. Since classics are normally free on your kindle, there is no excuse not to pick up a classic every once and a while. The book is charming and still a captivating read. I related best to Jo still after all these years and I get excited and disappointed right along with her. I do seem to find that this tale is much longer than I recall (I really think I read the abridged version) but I am still enjoying it. It was a great companion for this December as much of my reading time was dedicated to crafting holiday gifts.
3.5 snaps for me!

Love my New Ski Boot Boots!

Friday I tested out my beautiful new ski boots for the first time. My mom and dad bought me new boots for my birthday this past April when my mom was visiting from New York. Of course this was also three days after I had torn my ACL and was on crutches in a full leg brace immobilizing my knee. The guy at Sports Chalet got a real kick out of seeing me walk in and ask to try on ski boots (I could only try the right but that's OK since that is my slightly bigger foot anyways).
The night before their big outing!
My new Head boots are amazing. Totally customizable and so so comfortable. This was my first day back skiing since my ACL surgery and while I was totally terrified and hesitant, I knew my new boots would help make it easier. They give in all the right places and being able to customize them for me is huge. Can't wait to give them some more love this February in Utah for some family ski time.

My Gills are Dry

I think it's time. After 8 months of not a single dive, my gills are officially very dry and all I want to do is dive! Maybe a little weekend getaway in January could mean some dive time. I really miss the water and logging hours in the depths. My sister gave Dan and I a book about the 50 Places You Have to Dive Before You Die, and I am so antsy again. Anyone want to hit the depths with me?

Early Christmas Celebrations

It is really nice to get to celebrate Christmas over an entire week. We traditionally spend Christmas Eve to New Year's Day in NY with our East Coast family since we do not get to see them as often and our jobs both shut down over the break, while we celebrate a bit earlier with Dan's family in California.

This year our early Christmas celebrations spanned two weekends as on December 15 we were treated to an afternoon of trapeze by Laura and Jason for our Christmas gifts at the Trapeze School of New York on the Santa Monica Pier. We went as an entire family and for two hours we were all circus performers from my little 6 year-old nephew to my mother-in-law, Peggy.
Lovely family outing!
Since Laura and Jason had been before they moved on to the second trick you learn, while we all learned the first trick which would hopefully end in a catch. We had to jump off the trapeze platform, put our knees around the bar at the top of our first swing, drop our arms and hang from our knees at the top of our second swing and be caught by the instructor at the top of our third swing.
Dan had no problem with the trick.
I definitely struggled my first two attempts at getting my knees up, I would get so close and then kick which would totally destroy any momentum I had. Dan on the other hand took to it like a fish in water. Luckily I like to perform under pressure and was able to perform the last two tries so that I could go for the catch like Dan. Dan got his catch on the first try while it took me two, but we had such an amazing time that we are going back in January to learn our new trick!
I finally got it!
It's a hell of a workout but so much fun you don't even realize how hard you are working. You only figure it out over the next few days when your pecks are hurting and the back of your knees are all black and blue.

After swinging through the air, we were off to lunch on the pier and then headed back to our house to celebrate Dan's birthday with the family.

Then just six days later we were off to Orange County to celebrate Christmas again on December 20th and 21st. Our cousins Anna and Jimmy were also able to join us and on Friday night we all went out as a family for dinner and then Dan, Jimmy, Anna, my mother-in-law Peggy and I were off to the movies to see American Hustle. Then Saturday morning the whole family came over to Peggy's for breakfast and presents.
Dan, mom and I.
My nephews in their hats I made them for Christmas.
It was nice to celebrate with the family and have a second Christmas. Of course we also Facetimed with the entire family on Christmas Day. Technology is great. How do you balance Christmases between multiple families?

I love Holiday music. It just makes me happy and totally gets me in the spirit of the holiday season. While  my taste in Holiday music runs from Classical tunes to the modern pop music, I tried to narrow it down to my 10 favorites. Without further ado:

December Recipe Swap - Hot Buttered Rum

This month's recipe swap is all about my favorite Holiday cocktail, The Hot Buttered Rum! This recipe is one of my dad's holiday standards. At past Christmases, we have enjoyed hot buttered rum with our homemade apple cider on Christmas night while we open our stockings. Its a warm, comforting holiday drink and is great when the snow if falling all around you.

Hot Buttered Cider
Ingrediants (per cup)
Rum or Jack Daniels 1oz per 8oz of Cider (pick your posion)
Apple Cider 8-12 oz (I usually pick fresh cider in the refridgerated section)
Cinnamon sticks (1 per cup)
Butter (1 Tbsp per cup)
Everything you need!
If You are making a large batch, I suggest heating all the ingrediants in one pot on the stovetop. Cook until liquid is warm and butter is melted. Do not let it come to a boil.Make sure to stir while heating. This option is great if you are making a batch for a group larger than 5.
You're almost there.
If you are making a small batch, using the microwave is just as easy. Each mug should be heated for approximately 2 minutes, or until butter is almost melted. Stir each mug once heating is done to ensure all the ingrediants are well mixed. Great option for small batches or a cup on your own.
The final touch.
Happy Holidays!

Currently Craving - Holiday PJs

Christmas Morning PJs are a staple in my house. I love the button down PJ look but so prefer boxers to pants. I love it to be cold when I sleep and in pants its just to warm. I ordered these PJ Boxer sets from Victoria's Secret and I have my fingers crossed that they will be the perfect Christmas Morning outfit!

Wednesday Wishes - Gift Wrapping

I love to wrap Christmas gifts. It may be more fun than the actual shopping. Last year I bought myself a wrapping station. It's amazeballs. You can read more about it here.

I buy my wrapping paper every year from the Container Store because they have the best variety and options from paper to ribbons to nontraditional boxing options. It is also where I snagged my wrapping station. Other great options for paper are Kate's Paperie and online. You can always find more variety online then in store so explore!

I should also note that I am linking up with Because Shanna Said So, for her Random Wednesday Link Up. Check her out below:

Tuesday #Shoesday - No Repeats Week 6

Into the 6th week of the challenge and I have successfully not repeated any shoes yet! I am actually really enjoying rediscovering all my shoes and figuring out where I have holes in my collection as well as what shoes need to be finally given up. It is great to be more subjective about my shoes when I am wearing them full time. For example a few pairs are so stretched out now that I can't keep them on without giving my foot muscles a great workout, so away they go, while others I have forgotten how much I loved them.

So what did I rock this week?
#Shoesday 39: Barneys nude pumps let your outfit shine. #norepeatchallenge #newshoeaday
#Shoesday 40: Banana Republic holiday fringe flats. #norepeatchallenge #newshoeaday
#Shoesday 41: My first pair of @J.Crew Etta Pumps. In love. #newshoeaday #norepeatchallenge
#Shoesday 42: Toms Yellow Pop Herringbone. Perfect for running errands. #newshoeaday #norepeatchallenge
#shoesday 43: Sam Edelman silver flats for the SANTA Monica pub crawl. #norepeatchallenge #newshoeaday
#Shoesday 44: Calvin Klein flats. Jingle as you walk. #norepeatchallenge #newshoeaday
#Shoesday 45: Navy @sperrytopsider for dinner out. #newshoeaday #norepeatchallenge
Next week is my last full week until after the holidays since I can't pack 14 pairs of shoes for NY! I will still keep my new shoes up to date though!

Ugly Sweater Parties & White Elephant Exchanges

Last weekend Dan and I attended our friends' annual Ugly Sweater Party and White Elephant Exchange. I debuted my new Ugly Christmas Sweater inspired by the Holiday Classic Home Alone. It was a great way to relax and celebrate with our friends and I have to say this year's White Elephant gifts were pretty clutch. Here are some of the best pictures from the night.
So delicious and so easy to make!

Weekend Recap - Big 10 Pubcrawl and Giants Game

Last weekend was full of sports celebrations. After the Ugly Sweater Party on Friday (see tomorrow's post), we were off to the Hermosa Pier on Saturday for the Annual Big 10 Pubcrawl. Since I did not attend a Big 10 school but married a Big 10 alum, I happily go in all my PSU regalia to support him. The nice thing about my group of friends is that we have a pretty wide representation of Big 10 schools.
The Big 10 Boys.
The Big 10 Wives (Honorary Alums)
Saturday was also Snow Day in Hermosa Beach, where they bring in tons of snow and create a snowboard ramp with tricks down Pier Avenue. Watching the local borders was a great way to end the day.
Erin found us along the way!
Dan and I then got up super early on Sunday to drive down to San Diego for the Giants/Chargers game. We went with a large group of native New Yorkers to enjoy some tailgating and the game. Lucky for us, Dan's cousins live walking distance from the stadium. They were able to join us for the game and it was a breeze to park at their house and walk over.
Go Big Blue!

Although the Gmen played an absolutely horrible game. It was a lot of fun and we had a great day with all our friends. Last weekend was a whirlwind and I am looking forward to another weekend of craziness this weekend. December is always great because you have things to do every weekend, but you sure need January to recover!

Wardrobe Essentials

Tim Gunn's Guide to Style was a very similar show to one of my all time favorites, What Not To Wear. To honor them both as they are now both no longer creating new shows, I wanted to share what my wardrobe essentials are via Tim Gunn with a few other ideas of my own.

Wardrobe Essentials

Tim Gunn outlined his 10 Essential Items every woman's wardrobe needs as the following:
• Basic black dress
• Trench coat
• Classic dress pants
• Classic white shirt
• Skirt
• Blazer
• Day dress
• Cashmere sweater
• Jeans
• A comfortable alternative to a sweatsuit (a great pair of black walking shorts are my go to)

In addition I feel that every woman needs these three pair of shoes:
• Black Pumps
• Neutral Flats

Currently... December Edition

Currently...

Reading: Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. I am on a classics kick lately and loving that Amazon gives you these for free!

Eating: Organic Dark Chocolate pretzels from Whole Foods. Seriously the best and also my favorite pick me up during the workday.

Listening: Nat King Cole's The Christmas Song. Hands down the best Christmas song out there.

Watching: Elf.  Dan and I had a lazy evening on Saturday after the Big 10 Pubcrawl during the day. Elf has become one of my most favorite Holiday movies. One of my favorite lines: "We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corn and syrup."

Craving: These Ferragamo Varina Navy flats. They are just perfection.

Dreaming: Of Christmas. I love homes all decorated and the anticipation of celebrating Christmas traditions. How do you celebrate your holiday season?

Wednesday Wishes - Stocking Stuffers

I love to fill my family members' stockings full of neat and wonderful goodies. In our house we always open Christmas stockings after Christmas dinner while having tea and dessert and watching a Christmas movie. While some people may think stocking stuffers are just for little knick nacks, I have to admit I have received some of my nicest gifts each year in my stocking. Very often there is an autographed baseball from my dad or a gift card and/or lovely piece of jewlery from my mom. I love stockings because there is always a new surprise each year.

Here are some of my favorite, less tradtional stocking stuffers that are sure to put a smile on any girl's face.
