I know not everyone is into home décor but its one of those things that can be so fun and such a change of pace. Shopping for home décor is also completely different than clothing. While you are renting you may not want to make big purchases that may not transition well to your next place, or invest too heavily in something that you don't want to live forever with. Also if living with roommates you may not want to invest in furniture pieces like you will when you live on your own or with a spouse or significant other.
Still it is important to make a place your own. If you can paint your rental and see yourself staying longer than a year, go for it. We painted our place and it was worth the effort, even if we have to paint it back when we leave. The colors make it so much more personal and we are more selective about artwork since the color already speaks so much to us.
If painting isn't allowed, or isn't your thing, there are a lot of ways to personalize your space with accent décor. A great basket for blankets, or a floating shelf to show off your collectables, or a great print or cool candle can go a long way in making the space yours. It also means you don't have to spend a ton to make an impact.
